Celebrate the Holidays in the Warm Sunshine of Rocky Point!

Around the world, people end up snowed in during the winter holiday season, facing the bitter cold with only the hope of sharing joy and laughter with their friends and families. At FMI Rentals, we have a better idea for how you can spend your winter vacation time: in the tropical paradise of Rocky Point!

The climate here is amazing during the winter season; while everyone else is shut away in their homes as icy temperatures take over the landscape, the balmy beach town of Puerto Peñasco maintains steady temperatures ranging from the mid-60s to the high 80s during the months of November through January, with refreshing nighttime lows in the mid-40s to mid-60s. This season also sees the occasional rainy day or two, but unlike the monsoon storms during the summer months, these rainstorms are light showers and do not pose a threat.

In addition to the unbeatable weather conditions, Rocky Point residents also host a number of wonderful holiday celebrations to commemorate this jovial time of year, made all the better by living it up on the beach instead of freezing somewhere else!

Read on to learn more about the fun holiday celebrations and Rocky Point events that await those who make the trip to this beach destination during the winter season!

Local Holidays and Events in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico

In November, Rocky Point celebrates Dia de todos los Santos (All Saints Day) on the 1st, Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) on the 2nd, two very traditional Mexican holidays tied closely with Christian faith and local culture. The Day of the Dead is particularly notable, as it features altars made in honor of dearly departed loved ones. During this time, visitors to Rocky Point will see colorful altars decorated with items that recognize death but celebrate life, as well as items that the departed person enjoyed most in life, such as certain foods or trinkets.

The Annual Rocky Point Rally is a yearly gathering of motorcycle riders held locally on November 10th through November 13th, where festival-goers participate in games, concerts, donation drives, parties, and motorcycle-related stunts and shows. 2016 will mark the 16th year that riders have met up for this rally, continuing a fun tradition for visiting motorcycle riders.

Other celebrations and events in November include the Pinacate Skate Fest at the Levi’s Skate Park on November 12th, the Anniversary of the Mexican Revolution on November 21st, and Thanksgiving on November 24th. On November 25th, JJ’s Cantina hosts a garage sale benefitting the efforts of the Santa Claus Club, which donates clothing and toys to local families in need.

In December, nightly pilgrimages are made from the 1st through the 11th to the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe, in honor of Día de la Virgen de Guadalupe (Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe) on the 12th, which honors Mexico’s patron saint and commences the Christmas season parades and a festival.

The Cholla Bay Christmas Lights Parade is also beautiful, while spending Christmas Eve or Christmas Day on the beach on the 24th and 25th is a unique and wonderful experience. Dia de los Inocentes (Day of the Holy Innocents) on the 28th functions similarly to April Fool’s Day, which is not celebrated in Mexico, while the 31st of the month marks New Year’s Eve.

In January, Día de los Reyes Magos (Three Kings Day or Epiphany Day) is held on the 6th, marking the occasion in the Christian tradition when the three wise men brought presents for Jesus. In modern celebrations, the three kings bring presents for children, as Santa Claus is not always a prevalent cultural figure in Mexico.

Finally, if you’re interested in learning more about the natural environment in the gorgeous region of Sonora and the Sea of Cortez, the CEDO hosts natural history talks in both English and Spanish on every Tuesday and Saturday, with Spanish talks given at 2:00pm and English talks given at 4:00pm.
