Staying in any foreign country can be a stressful experience if you don’t do your research on what is acceptable and what is not, and a visit to Rocky Point is no exception. Although it may seem to be Americanized, there are many habits and customs that are purely south of the border. Here’s a few tips to help you plan your trip!

The Drinking Age is 18

If you are planning vacationing with your 18-year-old child, and do not approve of them drinking, have the conversation prior to starting your vacation.

Is It Safe to Drink the Water?

You’ve probably heard horror stories about Montezuma’s Revenge, and they aren’t always fiction. While it is perfectly safe in Rocky Point to bathe in or brush your teeth, when it comes to drinking, stick with bottled water. Even the restaurants in Rocky Point offer jugs of bottled water for your safety and convenience.

Street Cart Food

The street cart food sure smells great and is most likely safe to ingest, but if you have a sensitive stomach or are just worried about food safety in Rocky Point at a particular restaurant, find something else to eat instead.

Toilet Paper in Rocky Point is Not Always Meant to Be Flushed

Most likely you will be able to flush in your FMI Rentals vacation home, but since the Mexican sewage system is different than American ones, anytime you use a public restroom, you should deposit your paper in the trash can that is located next to the toilet.

What to Pack for Your Vacation

Packing for your Mexican vacation can be an adventure in itself. Not knowing what to expect can be disastrous at worst or mildly annoying at the very least. We suggest that, apart from your cell phones, cameras, and possibly a laptop, you leave the expensive stuff at home. The weather down here is pretty much warm and sunny throughout most of the year, so summer clothing will suffice, but you may want to bring a jacket for cooler evenings and nights. Flip-flops and/or sneakers are the only shoes you will need, but dancing shoes are an option for a fun-filled night out on the town!

Finances

Navigating the financial waters can be tricky as well, but if you just follow these simple tips, all will be well. ATM’s are great places for exchanging dollars for pesos, and their rates are usually better than any place else. You can also take advantage of Exchange Centers for quick and easy money exchanges. Americans are used to using credit or debit cards everywhere they go, but in Rocky Point, many places don’t accept cards, and the ones that do may charge you more for the convenience. Tipping is not just acceptable, it is expected, with 10 to 15 percent being the common percentage. The local tax rate is 16 percent.
