The Day of the Dead Celebration in Mexico is a festival held to honor deceased family members. The entire festival is three days and includes All Saints Day and All Souls Day. The festival starts on October 31 every year with All Hallows Eve. The children make a children’s altar and invite the spirits of the dead children to come back to the world of the living for a visit. November 1st is All Saints Day, a day where the adult spirits will come to the world of the living. November 2nd is All Souls Day, a day where the families go to the cemetery to decorate the graves and tombs of their departed relatives. The three days together are referred to as Día De Los Muertos.
During the holiday, locals will decorate with marigolds (the flower of the dead), candy skulls, and don wooden masks to celebrate those who were lost. This event is truly unique and worth a visit to Mexico on its own.
