Rocky Point, also known as Puerto Peñasco, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in northern Mexico, due to its close proximity to the border of the United States. One of the easiest ways to reach Rocky Point is to drive; however, there are a few things you should keep in mind to ensure you have an enjoyable trip.
How to Get There
The easiest, most direct way is through the entry point in Arizona at Lukeville. Driving distance is about 22 miles from either Phoenix or Tucson. Once you have reached Lukeville, you will simply go through the border, past a bridge, and right into Mexico on Highway 8, taking you straight to Rocky Point. In general, the Lukeville entry is considered the easiest and safest entry to Rocky Point.
If you are traveling from Southern California, you will cross the border south of Yuma at San Luis Rio Colorado. While the route is a newer highway, you should be aware that there are times that sand will blow across the highway and can be dangerous.
Other Travel Safety Tips
If you are driving in Mexico, you are required to have insurance coverage that is valid within Mexico. If you do not have the proper insurance, you do run the risk of arrest and even jail time if you do not have valid Mexican insurance. This type of short-term insurance is easy to obtain, and you should also have valid medical and travel insurance as well.
When traveling to and from and in the Rocky Point area, it is advised that you stick to the major highways and main roads, and travel during daylight hours.
Know and understand local laws. There have been reports that speed traps are set up in the area of Rocky Point, so it is a good idea to follow all speed and traffic laws. You should also know the proper authorities to contact in case of any emergency. Travel with a cell phone that has service in the area. Also, make sure you have your passport with you for re-entry into the United States.
