Getting to Puerto Peñasco has just gotten easier. While many people just drive to Rocky Point because of its location near the borders of the United States, others may want to make flights to Rocky Point instead.
TAR Airlines Inaugural Flight
Recently, TAR Airlines flew its first flight from Cd. Juarez to Puerto Peñasco. The flight was met at Mar de Cortes International Airport by the Municipal Marching Band. Passengers, upon debarking, were given dream catcher necklaces by members of the Tohono O’odham indigenous community.
This inaugural flight highlighted the beginning of TAR Airlines new service routes through Puerto Peñasco. This new route offers twice a week service to Cd. Juarez, Tijuana, and Hermosillo.
During the ceremonies, the flight was regaled from dignitaries including Peñasco Mayor Kiko Munro, the Convention and Visitors Bureau President, along with airline and airport representatives.
The General Director of TAR Airlines expressed appreciation to the passengers and the trust they put into the airline. He also pointed out that the scheduled flight for at least the next month are full, which highlights the efforts of the various government entities to help ensure the permanence of the flights.
About the Airport
Many people may be surprised that the lovely town of Puerto Peñasco has an airport. This local airport — The Mar de Cortes International Airport — was inaugurated on November 5, 2009 and caters to light aircraft. According to the airport, the facility can handle up to Boeing 767 and similar Airbus aircraft.
The airport has two runways and has been undergoing upgrades over the past few years in order to keep up with the demand for air travel to Puerto Peñasco. The airport is fully equipped, and you will have a pleasant experience flying in and out of this facility. While small, it does offer a comfortable waiting room and a snack bar. You’ll also find full signage and plenty of parking.
More Advancements Planned
Currently, a new development project is occurring on the way to Caborca toward the Mayan Palace Resort. Upon completion, the airport will be able to handle larger aircraft. The airport expects that Alaskan Airlines and AeroMexico will soon be landing there. Additionally, the facility is in negation with other airlines, including America West, Continental, Mexicana, and American Airlines.
