The cooler weather also brings out some of the city’s best outdoor festivals and markets. Here are some of the best things to do in Rocky Point this fall.
Cervantino Festival
Cervantino Festival is Mexico’s premiere arts and culture festival. This free festival celebrates theater, dance, music, and the visual arts of Mexico. The main festival is held in the city of Guanajuato in the south of Mexico, but for the past six years, Rocky Point has been an extension city of the festival. The festival is held over a weekend in October and most of the events are put on at the Plaza de Governors on the Malecon part of the Old Port. You can enjoy music, dancing, and art against the backdrop of the Sea of Cortez.
Mermaid Market
The Mermaid Market is an arts and craft market held on the first and third Saturdays of every month from October to April at the Shrimp Plaza downtown. Mexican and American artists get together to display their wares, making this market a great place to shop for souvenirs or presents. A portion of the proceeds from the market goes to DIF, a government agency in Mexico that provides assistance for families in need.
Día de Los Muertos
If you are visiting Rocky Point from October 31 to November 4, be ready to celebrate Día de Los Muertos. The holiday honors family members who have passed away with colorful altars. Each altar has flowers, food and alcohol, and objects that were important or special to the family member. Rodeo Drive is a popular spot for Día de Los Muertos celebrations. Shops in the area decorate their stores with alters, and there is a competition for the best tributes. You should also make sure to try Sugar Skulls and Pan de Muerto, which are traditionally eaten on Día de Los Muertos.
Rocky Point Rally
Ever year for a long weekend at the beginning of November, cyclists take over Rocky Point for what is known as The Greatest Motorcycle Fiesta Just South of the Border. The event starts on a Thursday with a kickoff party. Many local bars participate in the rally by hosting live music each night of the event. The rally includes a parade, live music, a bike show and contest, and parties most night at Malecon. This event is four days of bikes, food, music, and partying on the Sea of Cortez.
The Moura Estuary
If you would like to spend a relaxing day enjoying Rocky Point’s natural beauty, take a kayak trip through the Moura Estuary. This unique ecosystem is only 2,700 acres, but it is home to more than 140 of species of native and migratory birds. Many of the birds live and nest in the estuary year-round while others stop on their way southbound for the winter.
The waters of this wetland ecosystem are emerald green with a slight tide, which makes it the perfect spot for kayakers with all levels of experience. You can rent kayaks from many local shops and spend all day exploring the miles of waterways. If you do decide to spend the day here, make sure to stop by an oyster farm for lunch. There are many oyster farms in the area that you can kayak right up to. We suggest El Barco, a women-owned and operated oyster farming cooperative.
