Skullyz Annual Fishing Derby, June 1

The fish are always biting in Rocky Point, and Skullyz Cantina’s annual fishing derby offers a low-key way to enjoy a day on the water, wetting lines, sipping cold ones, and trying to catch your limit. They provide water and breakfast burritos, but feel free to bring your own snacks and beverages for this adults only cruise that celebrates the way life should be lived in Rocky Point. On a boat, catching fish, and drinking beer!

Circus Mexicus, June 5-10

This year marks the 25th anniversary of a music festival that began with one band and maybe 100 guests partying on the rooftop of what is now known as Skullyz but was then the Sunset Cantina. Today thousands of people attend this five-day music fest that has moved from venue to venue over the years until it finally landed in its fabulous digs at Sandy Beach, and just as the audience has grown, so has the line-up. The headliner has always been (and will always be) Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers, and American band who have claimed Rocky Point as their home, but also includes more than 25 others, all playing the music you can sing along to and won’t be able to keep from dancing to on the golden sands of Sandy Beach, or at a variety of venues in town. Ticket prices start at $25 per person for students and top out at $205 for a 4 day VIP per person ticket.

Borracho Bingo at Banditos, Wednesdays at 4 PM

Sometimes it is the events that occur on a regular basis (not an annual one) that brings the most pleasure as well as helping understand the area you are visiting better, and Borracho Bingo at Banditos is a funtastic example! It’s inexpensive, you only need $10 to buy in and 8 rounds of bingo ensures your night at Banditos will be filled with fun and hopefully lots of prizes. Prizes are given out after each round but even if you don’t win, singing along with the music that is playing will make your night out on the town worthy of remembering long after you return to real life.

Paint & Sip at Grapes and Barley, Thursdays at 12:30 PM

Shopping for souvenirs is a time-honored vacation tradition, but if you are looking for a different type of souvenir, something you created yourself, perhaps, taking part in this weekly event is the best way to do so. Paint and Sip at Grape and Barley offers all the materials you need, shared appetizers, and two drinks, all for the low price of $25. Spend a couple of hours out of your day painting the picture of the day, sipping, snacking, and relaxing, and the painting you create will be the souvenir you will cherish forever.

The party is an authentic glimpse into the culture of the people who live here, beginning with a call to independence (Grito de Delores), mariachi music, traditional foods, fireworks, and the burning of a makeshift castle! The Sea of Cortez

Obviously, the sea is the star of this show, offering life, recreation, and serenity to the people who live here and to the people who travel thousands of miles to play on its sandy beaches. Nearly 70% of the fish purchased in the area come from these waters, and the blue whales that make their home in the sea are obviously fat and well fed, living on a steady diet of the sea’s bounty. Charter fishing is a popular sport, as are sunset cruises that follow the paths of the dolphins who frolic in these waters and the world that exists beneath the sea is as vibrant and bustling as the big cities in northern states and cosmopolitan countries found all over the equator. Known as the Aquarium of the World, the calm waters are protected as an UNESCO World Heritage Site, guests could snorkel or scuba dive in its depths every day of their lives and never experience all the sea has to offer.

Tidal Pools

The tidal pools found in the Cholla Bay are another example of the diversity of the Sea of Cortez. Offering a startling microcosm of the underwater world, these tidal pools harbor creatures of all sorts, including barnacles, lichens, hermit crabs, and starfishes. The Sonoran Desert

The sand dunes found in the area are popular spots for ATV vehicles as beach driving is no longer allowed. El Pinacate Biosphere Reserve

When looking for something REALLY different, a visit to El Pinacate Biosphere Reserve and its 600 square miles of volcanoes is definitely in order. Here is where you will find over 400 cinder cones and a history that never fails to fascinate. Located just under 50 kilometers (approximately 31 miles) away from the beautiful beaches, this arid area will surprise visitors and delight young children who believe in the magic of exploding volcanoes, but there is no need to worry; the last eruption took place about 11,000 years ago! The largest volcano in the reserve, El Elegante, features a 1.5-mile diameter and an 800-foot-deep void, as well as incredible views of the valley of volcanoes. Offering desert landscape and lava tubes and fields, there still manages to be an excitement that hangs in the air no matter how long it has been since one of the volcanoes exploded. Cerro Colorado is famous for its red earth, mimicking the surface of Mars, even though the area was once used as training grounds for astronauts heading to the moon!

Well, you can rent a boat from many of the boat rental places in the area, but a snorkeling tour done on a charter is probably your safest option, and these places know where all the best spots in the water are hidden!

Del Mar Charters is the first place on our list, offering snorkeling lessons and a variety of snorkeling adventures, including a visit to Bird Island. Sonoran Scuba is another favorite snorkeling company, as it offers classes for the younger members of your traveling party. Teaching a child the basics of “breathing” underwater and making it fun while doing so is a talent not many companies excel at, and we are thankful that Sonoran Scuba is the exception to the rule! Rules for the Adventure

Whether you choose to snorkel on your own or take advantage of the tours being offered by a professional company, your safety is of utmost importance to us, and we would like to share a few “rules” with you! Checking the tide levels—Rocky Point tides rise and fall every 6 hours—can ensure your excursion is safe and fun and that you will be able to see clearly as you swim about. Choosing the wrong time can lead to murky waters with low visibility; the best times to snorkel will be at high tide, during incoming tide, and one hour before the tide makes its way out again! Another thing to watch out for is the sun. The Mexican sun can be devastating to skin unused to the strength of its rays, so be sure to apply (and reapply!) a waterproof sunscreen to your back, shoulders, neck, and legs—all the parts that will be facing the sun while you’re examining the sea bottom!

Sometimes the best way to get away from the crowds is to go under—under the sea, that is—where you will face a world filled with color and beauty. Snorkeling is a popular Mexican activity that doesn’t require a lot of expensive equipment or extensive experience; simply rent your snorkel, mask, and a pair of flippers and point yourself in the direction of the waters! There are tours that will take you to some of the more secluded spots, including Bird Island, but that involves extra people you may not want to get that close to. Take a Hike With These Activities in Rocky Point

It may be difficult to believe until you see, but the sand dunes located just outside Puerto Peñasco will make you feel like you are stranded in the desert even as the water is within sniffing distance! Fill a backpack with snacks and water and spend the day exploring the largest sand dunes field in North America. The sights and sounds that surround you will be unlike any you have experienced before! Many visitors are a little unsure of exploring on their own in a foreign land, which is entirely understandable.
